What options are available for selecting the word at the cursor?

Answer 1. Default Options

Main menu: "Edit | Select | Word" option can be used to select the word at the cursor.

Mouse: Double clicking while the cursor is at the end of a word highlights it.

Answer 2. Keyboard Shortcut

The following steps can be used to assign the "Edit | Select | Word" main menu option to a keyboard shortcut such as "Ctrl+Shift+W".

Select "Tools | Customize | Customize Keyboard Shortcuts" from the main menu.
Click the "Add" button.
Press a key (such as "Ctrl+Shift+W") or pick a key from the drop-down menu under the "Shortcut Key" field.
Click the "Menu command" radio button.
Select "MSelectWord" from the drop-down list.
Click the "Add" button.
Click the "OK" button to close the "Shortcut Key" dialog.
Click the "OK" button to close the "Keyboard Shortcuts" customization dialog.

Pressing "Ctrl+Shift+W" (or the assigned keyboard shortcut) will now invoke the "Edit | Select | Word" main menu option.

Answer 3. Optional Plugin

hkSelectText plugin can be used to add the following ways to select words:

Button click,
Right click menu, and
Actions Bar drop-down menu.
